Celebrating International Men’s Day on the 19th of November, local charity, Centre Supporting Voluntary Action (CSVA), unveiled a home for a new Men’s Shed project for Chelmsford.

The new Chelmsford Shed aims to offer a space for men to share skills and become part of a community. Lorraine Jarvis, from the CSVA said: “The project could not have started without the help and support of many local people. Huge thanks go to Chelmsford City Council for identifying a suitable building, to local solicitors Backhouse for legal help, to Essex County Council ‘s Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) and the QBE Foundation who have helped to fund the main refurbishment. Our Shedders can now start to make the place their own.”

Cllr John Aldridge, Chairman of Essex County Council said:  “This is exactly the kind of community led project that our Community Initiatives Fund was set up to support. It’s a great example of how we are able to inject cash directly into local projects that make such a difference to the lives of so many local people and we wish all those involved in the Chelmsford Men’s Shed every success.”

Cllr Simon Walsh, Cabinet Member for Waste and Environment who leads the CIF programme added: “Since CIF launched ten years ago, we’ve invested almost £20 million into a diversity of community projects. Here is another great example of a grass roots project that will bring far-reaching health and well-being benefits to so many local people.”

Essex Shed Network Coordinator Hamish Macdiarmid commented, “All relevant funders and participants, including those previously mentioned, as well as Maldon & District CVS, Who Will Care, Essex Community Foundation/Community Resilience Fund are excited to see the Chelmsford Shed taking shape. Here’s to getting the ‘Shed On’ in 2017!”

New Southminster Shed Info Meeting 19th January 2017

A successful information meeting was held at the Southminster Memorial hall on Saturday 19th November 2016, with fifteen participants. After a short presentation on what ‘Men in Sheds’ projects are all about, Martin Vale and Bob Adams, of the Maldon Shed, fielded some questions. There were some fabulous scones provided by Kath Savage of the Memorial hall and a short film on Shedders produced by Essex County Council.

There will be a follow-up meeting, on Thursday 19th January 2017 at 7pm, to discuss future plans, nurture more Shedders from the Dengie and put together a Steering group. We will be looking for people to volunteer to step up to become: Chairman; Membership Secretary; Treasurer and Fundraiser, among other supporting roles.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Southminster Shed or are curious about what ‘Men in Shed’ projects are all about, please contact Hamish on 01621 851891 or email at hamish@maldoncvs.org.uk
